Kid's Halloween haul might have less chocolate in It this year

The ring had sentimental value for Misti Smith.

The houses handing out full-size candy bars just became even more coveted.

CNN recently highlighted how shrinkflation might impact your chocolate indulgence this Halloween.

Cocoa prices have more than doubled since the beginning of the year due to severe weather and droughts in West Africa, which supplies about 70% of the world’s cocoa.

In response, candy companies are shrinking bag sizes and increasing prices. There’s even talk of using less chocolate in some products.

They might, as CNN puts it, “swap out a layer of chocolate for other fillings, like wafers or nuts,” or pack variety bags with candies that use less chocolate.

Non-chocolate candies are also being pushed more aggressively. Mars, for example, is expanding its fruity and gummy lines, catering to younger consumers. But the rising chocolate costs are a factor, too.

Many variety packs have shrunk, meaning you could pay the same but end up with fewer candies per bag.

In short, your kid’s Halloween haul might be heavier on fruity candies this year—and lighter on the chocolate bars you love to “borrow.”
