A recent study shows that ATM fees have reached an all-time high, with a national average of $4.77.
That amount includes both the fee from your bank and the ATM for out-of-network transactions. On average, ATMs charge $3.19, while your bank adds $1.58.
This is up by four cents from last year. A decade ago, the average was $4.35, and 20 years ago, it was $2.66 (which would be $4.42 when adjusted for inflation).
Atlanta has the highest ATM fees at $5.33, followed by San Diego and Phoenix at $5.22. Among the 25 major metro areas studied, Boston has the lowest fees at $4.16.
