The top post-moving regret is: Not getting rid of more stuff!

The Real Struggle of Moving: More Stressful Than a Wedding or a Baby?

Moving into a new place can be exciting—but the actual process of moving? Not so much.

A new survey asked people about the worst part of moving, and the top complaints were: it being a bigger hassle than expected, costing more than anticipated, and feeling sad about leaving their old home.

But one regret stood out above the rest: Not getting rid of more stuff. Many movers wished they had taken the opportunity to donate old clothes, ditch unnecessary appliances, or finally let go of sentimental clutter they wouldn’t actually miss.

The numbers say it all:

  • 92% of Americans who moved last year faced challenges.
  • 82% found it stressful.
  • 35% say moving is more stressful than planning a wedding.
  • 29% say it’s worse than having a baby.
  • 19% found it tougher than getting a divorce.
  • 17% say it’s more stressful than being laid off.
  • 14% even say it’s more stressful than a death in the family.

Moral of the story? If you’re moving soon, lighten your load—literally. You’ll thank yourself later.
