Waffle House is implementing a temporary surcharge of 50 cents per egg, the Georgia-based restaurant chain announced Monday. The price hike is a response to rising egg costs caused by an ongoing bird flu outbreak.
“The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (Bird Flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices,” Waffle House stated in a news release. “Consumers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions.”
Effective February 3, all Waffle House menus will include the surcharge. The company, which operates over 2,000 locations in 25 states, said it is uncertain how long the increase will remain in place.
“While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived, we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” the statement read.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the price of a large carton of eggs rose by 39 cents to $7.63 per dozen in the week ending January 31.
