MAUI, Hawaii — An investigation is underway trying to find out why a body was found in the wheel well of a United Airlines plane that landed in Hawaii.

The flight took off from Chicago on Tuesday morning and landed at Maui’s Kahului Airport on Tuesday afternoon, The New York Times reported.

“A body was found in the wheel well of one of the main landing gears on a United aircraft,” after it landed, the company said in a statement.

The person was not identified, Maui Police said. It is not known when the person entered the wheel well, where the landing gear is stored during flight. It is only accessible from outside of the plane on a Boeing 787-10.

It is also not known how the person died, CNN reported.

The person was not designated a stowaway, The New York Times reported however it is the most common way people try to board a flight without a ticket, CNN reported. Typically, people will get crushed as there is not a lot of room in the compartment.

There is low oxygen and extreme temperatures in that part of the plane, according to what the Federal Aviation Administration has said in the past, the Times reported.
