LONDON — Britain’s current foreign secretary, Liz Truss, is expected to be appointed the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Truss beat former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak in an internal race for the leader of the UK’s governing Conservative party and thus the U.K.’s new prime minister.
Under Britain’s parliamentary system of government, the Conservative Party was allowed to hold an internal election to select a new party leader and prime minister without going to the broader electorate, according to The Associated Press.
Truss will replace Boris Johnson, who announced his resignation on July 7.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Truss, 47, entered Parliament in 2010 and later became Boris Johnson’s foreign secretary in 2021.
On Tuesday, Queen Elizabeth II will formally appoint Truss as Britain’s prime minister.
The ceremony will take place at the queen’s Balmoral estate in Scotland.
The next general election isn’t required until December 2024.
