New York police said the woman was riding a southbound No. 5 train to Times Square with her three children around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when the Black man, described as 50-55 years old and about 6 feet tall and 150 pounds, started berating her, WNBC reported.

Investigators said the man yelled racist slurs at them, spit twice in their direction and knocked her phone from her hand. The man then kicked the phone out the back of the open subway door and onto the tracks. He then fled near West 41st Street. He was last seen wearing a camouflage sweater, dark sweatpants and black sandals with mismatched black and white socks.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she is in stable condition.

The attack is the latest in a spike of anti-Asian hate crimes across the country.

Last week, also near Times Square, a 65-year-old Filipina American woman was assaulted while walking to church. A man on parole convicted of killing his mother nearly two decades ago was charged with assault and attempted assault as hate crimes.
